AI answering machine

An AI answering machine takes calls when nobody is available, asks what the call is about in conversation and passes the request on in an orderly form.

Also: intelligent answering machine, AI voicemail, AI answering service

A classic answering machine plays a greeting and records a message. Whoever listens to it has to pick out name, callback number and request by ear. Many callers hang up before that. An AI answering machine holds a short conversation instead: it asks when something is missing and can answer simple questions right away.

The result is not a tape but a summary with the details needed for the callback. This is most useful outside opening hours, during breaks and when all lines are busy. What the assistant may commit to is defined by the business beforehand, for example whether it books appointments or only notes callbacks.
